The Melidoni Cave, also called "Gerondospilios," is located close to Rethymno approximately a 30-minute drive away. It holds a fascinating history and archaeological findings, some of them displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. During ancient times, specifically the Minoan Civilization, the cave was a site of religious ceremonies dedicated to Talos, the mythological humanoid guard of Crete. The cave is also known for a tragic event that occurred in October 1823 (during the Greek War of Independence), where 400 women and children sought refuge in the cave from Ottoman forces, however, they were all brutally killed. Today, the cave houses an ossuary containing the bones of these heroic individuals and you will also see awe-inspiring rock formations and impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
